Life as a DVD 2008-09-01 - 10:46 p.m. 
I would like to sit on the couch, put in the rewritable DVD of my life, and turn on the machine.I would like to press the rewind button. I would like to otherwise get past the contrived lull in the protagonist's fortunes until the equally predictable but infinitely more pleasant. d'enouement. I would like the ride operator at this sadistic carnival to put down the hooch for 10 seconds and let me out. I would like life to stop being a series of concrete slabs that require skull fractures to ascend. Sometimes I would like life to stop altogether. Like most things in my life, however, I have little control over the machine. I just hear the disc spin, and watch the screen, and scream for me to do something else. Because the outcome seems so obvious. So goddamn obvious. |
