Life is great!

2002-05-05 - 1:27 a.m.

Ahhh, a free day! No work at all!...well there was listening to some CD's while just happening to make an excel chart for research, but that doesn't count.

I woke today and just expected to treat myself to some discount Chinese food. Imagine my surprise when I hear music drifting across Tappan Square and hundreds of people clumped together and looking festive. It was the May Fair, sortof a pre-finals extravaganza featuring all sorts of amazing things.

There were Brazilian martial arts demonstrations, an alpaca holding pen featuring the lovely beasts, sword-dancing, free food, a dunking pen and gobs of other stuff. I discovered the difference between alpacas and llamas, got some stats on how to breed them and all sorts of cocktail party info. Scary Goth Boy "stalked" me for awhile, sounding way too interested/affectionate. This boy hunts down anything with a penis, I'm telling you. He made me incredibly uncomfortable for a little while but I finally got him off my back. I wandered off and had an incredible lunch. The egg drop soup was perfection.

After that I went back to the fair and hung around the alpacas some more. Gah, they're so cool! Fluffy, too. I caught up with Raymi and then watched some people perform this intricate type of double-handled sword dancing. A northern England thing that has alot of Irish components.

I ended up running into my friend Jes along the way. Jes is a lovely Irish girl majoring in theatre. She's always got a great sense of humor and confidence about her. We talked as we oggled this magician doing elaborate tricks. I asked her if she had seen the alpaca. Hee, she hadn't so we jaunted up and visited the alpaca some more. I can't get enough of weird looking critters. After that we walked around for awhile and finally ended up getting drinks by the Java Zone. We chatted about life, what we're doing this summer, life plans, how we'd like to travel, y'know, youth stuff.

After we parted I ran into some other people I knew and got some nice hugs there. Stopped by my room to relax and make a few charts, listen to some Jethro Tull.

After that I caught Raymi's trapezee performance in this 8 person show called "Touch the Sky." Basically the trapezee class on campus comes out and performs aerial manuevers to delight everyone. It's usually really short but breath-taking. Raymi's been doing this for a year or so now, so I thought he'd be pretty decent. What I saw, though, was hilarious and delightful. Out he struts with a rose in his mouth, "Man of La Mancha" playing from Don Quixote. He begins his routine with all these fancy maneuvers, with this wide-eyed sortof maniacal grin as he flies through the air, rose in mouth all the while.

While I was there I met up with Alec, a long time computer science friend of mine and talked for a bit. He invited me to CS games night, which is really an excuse to get people together to blow shit up in video games. Ahhh t'was mad phat, yes. Someone had a bootleg DVD copy of Lord of the Rings, but the sound ended up being really poor so I didn't join the die-hards who watched it despite not hearing much.

All in all it was a full, incredibly fun day...and tomorrow'll be a whole new experience. Alec invited me and a bunch of other people from the huge group we're a part of to Dim Sum. Imagine Chinese waiters or waitresses who speak no English carting around bizare looking dishes in tight succession; that's Dim Sum. It's in this Asian plaza that has chachki shops, a Chinese market and a general store that I kid you not has the biggest porn collection I have ever seen. That's where I got my red frog with a coin in it's mouth. I'm proud of that chachki. After that going to see the new Spiderman movie.

I feel spoiled...and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
